49th Annual High School Art Scholarship Show
April 27 – May 1, 2022
Reception & Awards Ceremony, Sunday, May 1, 1-3pm
All students grades 9-12 in Shiawassee County, Chesaning and Ovid-Elsie are invited to participate in the Shiawassee Arts Center’s 49th Annual High School Art Scholarship Show & Competition April 27 – May 1, 2022. $2,000 in scholarship awards, including the $600 Janis Kazen Award will be presented at the reception, Sunday, May 1, 1-3pm.
Students do not need to be currently enrolled in an art class. Home school and private high school students are welcome.
Scholarship Chairperson and SAC Arts Education Director, Linda Ruehle states, “Since the establishment of SAC in 1972, more than $87,000 in scholarships and awards have been granted to provide students with recognition and financial assistance in their artistic growth. Professional artists from out of the county judge the work on originality, creativity, technical skill and presentation.” For more information or questions call (989)723-8354.
The Shiawassee Arts Center, located next to Curwood Castle in Owosso, is open Monday – Friday 10-5pm, weekends noon-4pm. The Arts Center features the artwork of local and statewide artists in eight galleries including the Frieseke Gallery and a specialty Gift Shop. The public is welcome, there is no admission charge and the facility is handicap accessible. SAC, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2022, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to offer quality arts and cultural activities that educate, entertain and enrich our community. The Shiawassee Arts Center opens its second exhibit of 2022
The Shiawassee Arts Center opens its second exhibit of 2022 featuring the works of artists from “It’s All About Cats” Group, Shiawassee Artists’ Guild, Gary Mulnix of Owosso and SAC Instructor’s Exhibit. The exhibit, which runs March 15 through April 24, is generously sponsored by Randy and Molly Woodworth. The public is welcome to attend the ‘Meet the Artist’ reception, Sunday, March 20, 1-3pm.

SAC Holiday at the River
HOLIDAY ALONG THE RIVER opens this weekend at the Shiawassee Arts Center! Along with the artwork of over 80 Michigan artists on display and for sale is this limited-edition, one-of-a-kind, hand-painted Polish Glass Ornament of Curwood Castle along with a new 500-piece jigsaw puzzle of Curwood Castle. New SAC Exhibit
The Shiawassee Arts Center 24th Annual Member Artists Show features a variety of multi-media artwork of nearly 100 Michigan artists June 22 through September 5. The exhibit and award is generously sponsored by Owosso Graphic Arts in memory of Lance Ellenberg.
The public is invited to “Meet the Artists”, see their work, and enjoy complimentary refreshments and music during the opening reception Friday, June 25, 4-7pm — $500 in awards will be presented at 6pm. The juror is Valerie Allen, she is a professional artist living in Michigan. She received her BFA from University of Cincinnati, associate degree in interior design from Delta College and post-graduate studies at Central Michigan University. She is the curator of Studio 23 in Bay City, Michigan and a certified working artist for Golden Artist Colors of New Berlin, New York Professor of Art at Delta College.

After being closed for three months due to the state mandatory shutdown, the Shiawassee Arts Center reopened with a new exhibit July 7 with the 23rd Annual Member Artists Show. The non-juried show, which continues through August 30, features the multi-media work of 87 mid-Michigan artists from as far away as Ann Arbor, Mt. Pleasant, Beulah, Spring Arbor and Eaton Rapids. The exhibit is sponsored by Dr. Dan Williams & Diane Cutler and DayStarr Communications
Awards totaling $600, judged by Artist Louis Marinaro, Professor of Art, School of Art & Design, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor will be presented at the closing reception, Sunday, August 30, 1-3pm.
Six $100 awards were given to Karl Fechner of Owosso, Sherry Nelsen of Fenton, Jennifer Ross of Corunna, Camilla Skodinski of Owosso, Rich Tesner of Flushing and Xavier of Owosso. Honorable mentions went to Doug DeLind, Laura DeLind, Ruth Egnater, Marie Gougeon, Stephanie Gregg, Marcia Guetschow, Tammy LaMay, Karen Marumoto, Gary Mulnix, Carolyn O’Connell, Natalie Park, Sally Rose, Phil Ruehle, Linda Ruehle, Pooh Stevenson and Tammy VanderMolen
Also during the reception former Owosso Community Development Director and one of the founders of the Friends of the Shiawassee River, Phil Hathaway, will promote, sign and sell his new book “History of the Shiawassee River”.
